The Arab League has reiterated that the issue of Palestinian refugees lies at the heart of the Palestinian cause. The organization firmly opposes any form of displacement for the Palestinian people, whether within occupied territories or beyond. Additionally, it has warned of the severe consequences stemming from Israeli plans aimed at altering the demographic reality, which threaten regional security and stability.
This statement emerged from the Arab League’s General Secretariat in recognition of World Refugee Day. The statement emphasized the urgent need to strengthen protections for refugees and ensure their fundamental rights. It also highlighted the importance of supporting host countries and communities that bear increasing burdens due to the influx of large numbers of refugees.
The Arab League reaffirmed its commitment to the crucial role played by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees. The organization called for necessary financial, political, and legal support for UNRWA, while rejecting any attempts to diminish its role, eliminate it, or alter the legal status of Palestinian refugees.
The statement also addressed the displacement crisis in Sudan, underscoring the importance of supporting Arab countries that host Sudanese refugees, particularly Egypt. This support aims to empower these nations to continue delivering services and managing the growing humanitarian burdens.
The Arab League urged the international community to maintain its support for humanitarian organizations focused on refugee issues, especially UNRWA and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This collaboration is essential to address the escalating humanitarian challenges in the Arab region and to ensure the rights and safety of Palestinian refugees.
