Minister of Transport Discusses UNDP Projects in Yemen's Transport Sector

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, Minister of Transport Abdul Salam Humaid engaged with Nadia Al-Awlaima, the Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen. The discussions centered around the UNDP’s interventions and projects within the transport sector, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts for effective implementation.

Key Projects and Support for Port Development

The meeting also included Captain Ali Al-Sobhi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Ports, and Captain Yasslam Mubarak, the Acting Deputy CEO of the General Authority for Maritime Affairs. They reviewed the support provided by the UNDP for enhancing the performance of the Aden Gulf Ports Authority, the Arabian Sea Ports Authority, and the General Authority for Maritime Affairs.

Significant projects under discussion included the Japanese-funded initiative to upgrade the Port of Aden. This initiative focuses on maintaining the Al-Mahalla Port’s roofs, installing a ship monitoring system, improving the container terminal’s efficiency, and providing a crane for Mukalla Port. The Japanese government recently announced a grant of $5 million aimed at further developing the Port of Aden.

Strategic Importance of Transport Projects

Minister Humaid emphasized the strategic importance of these projects in enhancing operational efficiency, particularly for the Port of Aden. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the UNDP in rehabilitating and developing the transport sector. The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to intensifying efforts in this vital sector, which plays a crucial role in supporting and advancing the national economy.

UNDP’s Commitment to Funding and Coordination

In response, Al-Awlaima reaffirmed the UNDP’s dedication to implementing various transport projects. She highlighted the programme’s efforts to secure funding from donor countries and strengthen communication and coordination with the Ministry of Transport and its affiliated sectors. This collaboration aims to enhance joint operations and execute more projects based on identified priorities and needs.

This meeting marks a crucial step in advancing Yemen’s transport infrastructure, with both parties committed to fostering sustainable development and economic growth through enhanced cooperation.
