Minister of Interior Discusses Security Cooperation with EU Delegation in Aden

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, the interim capital of Yemen, Minister of Interior Major General Ibrahim Haidan engaged with a European Union delegation led by EU Ambassador to Yemen, Gabriel Monuera Vinales. The discussions focused on strengthening security cooperation between Yemen and the EU.

Overview of Security Efforts

During the meeting, which also included Dutch Ambassador Janneke Seppen, German Ambassador Hubert Beier, French Opera House Chairman Aymeric Beauvillain, and EU mission political officer Claire Nanter, Minister Haidan highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to enhance security and stability in Yemen. He emphasized the importance of digital development and the implementation of biometric identification in national identity systems. This initiative aims to streamline data management, curb identity fraud, and effectively track individuals who violate the law.

Commitment to Support and Training

Minister Haidan expressed his aspirations for logistical support from the EU, particularly in training and capacity-building programs for police officers. He underscored the need for improved services for citizens and a robust approach to combating terrorist organizations. The Minister praised the EU’s active role in supporting the Yemeni government.

Addressing Houthi Violations

The Minister also addressed the violations and crimes committed by Houthi militias against civilians. He pointed out that these militias lack any legitimate political or human rights agenda and operate as proxies for Iran alongside terrorist organizations. Haidan described the dire conditions imposed by the Houthis, noting their treatment of citizens in controlled areas as hostages, alongside the imposition of taxes and the looting of salaries.

EU Delegation’s Support for Yemeni Leadership

In response, the EU delegation reaffirmed their support for the Presidential Leadership Council, represented by President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi. They reiterated their commitment to backing the Yemeni government and the Ministry of Interior through various support, training, and capacity-building programs.

Attendance and Conclusion

The meeting also included the Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Dr. Faer Ghalab, who contributed to the discussions. The collaboration between Yemen and the EU marks a critical step towards enhancing security and stability in the region.
