Strengthening Health Partnerships

Dr. Qassem Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, met today with a team from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group. The discussion focused on various health-related topics and opportunities for enhancing cooperation between the two entities.

Expanding Private Sector Engagement

Minister Baheeb emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships with the private sector, particularly in health. He stated that these collaborations serve as a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development and improving access to healthcare services. The ministry is adopting a strategic approach to localize pharmaceutical and therapeutic nutrition industries. This initiative aims to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports by establishing several key facilities in this sector.

Addressing Priority Health Needs

During the meeting, the minister outlined the sector’s top priority needs. He highlighted the establishment of university hospitals to train medical personnel and enhance medical education. Additionally, he proposed creating a health fund in partnership with the private sector and adopting a health endowment initiative. These efforts aim to ensure sustainable health financing and provide long-term support sources.

IFC’s Commitment to Health Initiatives

The IFC team, including Yemen’s Country Manager Muneef Sultan, World Bank Energy Sector Manager Ali Ahmed, and Coordinator Sahar Shibani, presented a comprehensive overview of the organization’s activities and goals in Yemen. They discussed their contributions to health-related projects by strengthening the role of the private sector and investing in vital areas.

Exploring Investment Opportunities

The team expressed their readiness to collaborate on priority health initiatives and work with the ministry to explore investment opportunities that have a developmental impact. They reaffirmed the IFC’s commitment to supporting the ministry’s efforts in enhancing the health system and developing its infrastructure.
