Emergency Coordination Committee Discusses Current Health Challenges in Yemen

The High-Level Emergency Coordination Committee convened today in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital. Led by Dr. Qassem Baheeb, the Minister of Public Health and Population, the meeting focused on the current epidemiological situation regarding fevers and various other diseases. The committee emphasized the roles of relevant agencies in addressing ongoing health challenges.

Key Presentations Highlight Health Issues

During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Dahan, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zaher, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Aden, and Dr. Sahar Hijazi, Director of UNICEF in Aden, attended. Dr. Yasser Baheesh, Director General of the National Malaria Control Program, presented an overview of the current epidemiological situation, outlining challenges and offering recommendations to enhance collaboration among different sectors.

Dr. Hanan Al-Turaymi, Director of the Surveillance Department, provided a similar presentation on the epidemiological status of cholera, measles, and diphtheria. She discussed the measures taken by the Ministry of Health and the challenges it faces in combating these diseases.

Call for Collaborative Action

Minister Baheeb stressed the importance of collective efforts to develop a joint action plan. This plan aims to address fevers at both national and local levels while identifying practical solutions within a unified health framework. He highlighted the need to enhance media and educational roles, particularly in high-risk areas, to foster effective health communication and awareness.

Dr. Baheeb noted that many diseases are preventable through vaccination. He emphasized the critical role of the National Center for Health Education and Population Awareness in delivering vital health messages to the community.

Engaging the Media for Community Support

The Minister urged various media outlets to engage positively with the Ministry’s initiatives to combat fevers and other diseases. He called for the establishment of community partnerships that would benefit public health.

Training Initiatives for Emergency Medical Staff

In a related event, Dr. Baheeb underscored the significance of training in enhancing the capabilities of medical staff in emergency rooms. He addressed the increasing need for skilled personnel to save lives.

At the conclusion of a training course for emergency medical care trainers, organized by the National Center for Emergency and Ambulance Services in collaboration with WHO and supported by the World Bank, Dr. Baheeb stated, “Emergency care is the primary measure for improving the quality of work in any hospital and the responsiveness of the health system.” He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting such training programs to elevate the skills of emergency staff in both central and peripheral areas.

WHO’s Support for Lifesaving Training

Dr. Afrima, the Acting WHO Representative in Yemen, highlighted the importance of this specialized training course aimed at saving lives. She noted that it aligns with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office’s plans and expressed hope that the concepts covered in the course would translate into practical applications.

Over the four-day course, thirty doctors and nurses from emergency departments in central hospitals across liberated provinces received theoretical and practical knowledge related to emergency care, utilizing various tools provided by the WHO.
