Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering support for the Lebanese people. He emphasized the GCC’s commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and stability during a recent statement.
Al-Budaiwi stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in light of escalating military tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border. He urged all parties to exercise restraint, prioritize the protection of civilians, and avoid involvement in regional conflicts. His remarks highlight the importance of preventing the expansion of hostilities in the region.
The Secretary-General reiterated the GCC’s position as outlined in the ministerial statement, which calls for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution mandates Israel to respect Lebanon’s borders and affirms the need for the Lebanese government to maintain control over its territory. Al-Budaiwi emphasized that Lebanon must exercise its full sovereignty, ensuring that no weapons exist without government approval and that no authority operates outside of the Lebanese government.
In addition, the GCC statement underscored the importance of expediting presidential elections in Lebanon. It also called for the implementation of essential economic reforms to enable the Lebanese government to fulfill its responsibilities to its citizens. These steps are crucial for restoring stability and ensuring the welfare of the Lebanese people.
