Governor of Hadhramaut Discusses Development and Humanitarian Interventions with UN Delegations
In a significant meeting held in Mukalla, Hadhramaut Governor Mabkhout bin Madi engaged in discussions with two separate delegations from the United Nations. The first meeting included representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), led by European Union representative Walid Abdulshafi. The second meeting featured the Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Yemen, Pierre Andrew.
Enhancing Development Cooperation
During the meeting with the UNDP delegation, Governor bin Madi emphasized the importance of strengthening collaborative efforts to promote sustainable development within local communities. He highlighted the need for effective coordination in capacity-building initiatives and institutional competency development in government operations. These efforts aim to bolster sustainable development and support the EU-funded project known as the Institutional and Economic Resilience Enhancement in Yemen (SIERY). This project seeks to enhance local authorities’ access to public services and improve social cohesion and sustainable recovery.
Key attendees at this meeting included Hadhramaut’s Technical Affairs Undersecretary Engineer Amin Barziq, Director General of the Ministry of Public Works and Roads Engineer Saleh Al-Amari, and the UNDP’s National Coordinator Basem Al-Saqir. Additionally, Engineer Abdullah bin Makhasin coordinated efforts for both Hadhramaut and Marib.
Addressing Food Security Challenges
In the subsequent meeting with the WFP delegation, which included EU representative Shuhra Naqshbandi, the discussions centered on the humanitarian interventions and livelihood improvement programs initiated by the WFP in Hadhramaut. Governor bin Madi reviewed the progress of the Food Security Response and Resilience Project (FSRRP), which is a collaborative effort involving the UNDP, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the WFP, funded by the International Development Association of the World Bank.
The UNDP’s role in this project focuses on enhancing agricultural production infrastructure and improving resilience to climate change. This initiative operates in partnership with the Social Fund for Development and the Public Works Project.
Attendees at this meeting included Engineer Amin Barziq, the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hadhramaut Ambassador Salem Balfaqih, and the Directors General of the Planning and International Cooperation Office Omar Al-Shouli, the Mukalla Directorate Engineer Saleh Al-Amari, the Ghayl Bawazir Directorate Salem Al-Atyshi, and the Burum Mayfa Directorate Dr. Khalid Al-Juhai.
These meetings reflect Hadhramaut’s commitment to collaborating with international organizations to address pressing development and humanitarian issues. By engaging with the UNDP and WFP, the governor aims to foster sustainable growth and improve the living conditions of local communities in the region.
