French Senate Condemns Houthi Militia's Sabotage in the Red Sea

The French Senate passed a resolution today condemning the destructive actions of the Houthi militia in the Red Sea. This resolution calls for international action to safeguard maritime navigation and protect the environment in this critical region.

Senate Vote and Attendance

During a special session, the Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution, with 322 members supporting it. The session included the presence of Yemen’s Ambassador to France, Dr. Riyad Yasin, who expressed his gratitude for the Senate’s decision.

Houthi Threats to Maritime Security

Senate members highlighted that the Houthi militia exploits ongoing events in Gaza to jeopardize the security of the Red Sea. They noted that the militia has engaged in terrorist activities since its coup against Yemen’s legitimate government in 2014. Senators emphasized the urgent need to address these escalating threats in this strategic waterway.

Environmental and Economic Impact

Ambassador Riyad Yasin praised the Senate’s resolution, pointing out the significant risks Yemen faces due to the Houthi militia’s sabotage of commercial ships and oil tankers in the Red Sea. He detailed the militia’s use of mines and explosive-laden boats in their attacks.

Yasin explained that these assaults not only threaten international maritime security but also lead to extensive environmental pollution from oil spills. This pollution harms marine ecosystems and jeopardizes the region’s marine life.

Additionally, he noted that these terrorist actions directly impact Yemen’s economy. Yemen relies on the Red Sea for importing essential goods, and the Houthi attacks on international shipping have disrupted supply chains. This disruption has resulted in a sharp increase in food and medicine prices, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni people.

Call for International Support

The ambassador expressed his appreciation for France’s support and the Senate’s initiative to highlight the challenges Yemen faces due to Houthi attacks. He asserted that this resolution represents a significant step toward mobilizing the international community to confront these threats. Furthermore, it strengthens efforts to support Yemen’s legitimate government in regaining control over all territories and ports.

Yasin urged the international community to support the Yemeni government in achieving internal stability, securing international trade routes in the Red Sea, and mitigating the negative economic impacts on the Yemeni population.

In summary, the French Senate’s resolution marks a pivotal moment in addressing the ongoing challenges posed by the Houthi militia in the Red Sea, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect maritime security and the environment.
