On Monday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed U.S. Special Envoy Timothy Lenderking and U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Stephen Fagin. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Yemen and the United States.
During the discussions, President Alimi emphasized the need for increased U.S. support for Yemen’s economy. He highlighted the importance of improving living conditions and addressing the humanitarian impact of Houthi militia attacks on oil facilities and international shipping routes. The President expressed hope that U.S. assistance could help stabilize these critical areas.
President Alimi listened as Special Envoy Lenderking provided insights into potential regional and international changes following the recent U.S. elections. Lenderking also discussed his recent efforts to de-escalate tensions and the options available to encourage the Houthi militia to engage seriously in a comprehensive political process under United Nations auspices.
In this context, President Alimi reaffirmed the council’s and the government’s commitment to a comprehensive and just peace process based on national, regional, and international agreements, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2216. This commitment underscores the leadership’s determination to pursue stability and peace in Yemen.
President Alimi expressed his gratitude for the United States’ support for the Yemeni people and their legitimate leadership. He acknowledged the humanitarian and developmental interventions made by the U.S. across various sectors. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to enforce the UN Security Council’s arms embargo on Iranian exports to the Houthi militia.
The meeting also included the presence of Major General Saleh Al-Maqlah, the Director of the Office of the President of the Presidential Leadership Council.
This engagement highlights the ongoing collaboration between Yemen and the U.S. as both nations work towards stability and prosperity in the region.
