On Saturday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen. This meeting focused on the ongoing efforts to revive the peace process in Yemen.
During the meeting, President Alimi listened to Grundberg’s briefing on the outcomes of his recent consultations and communications. The discussions highlighted the envoy’s coordinated efforts with the international community to restore peace, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.
President Alimi praised the UN envoy’s commitment to fostering calm and establishing peace in Yemen. He pointed out that the Houthi militia consistently evades its peace obligations, especially when the international community believes that progress is imminent. He emphasized that the militia’s maneuvers reveal their alignment with Iran’s regional agenda.
The President noted that recent events underscore a troubling pattern. He stated that the crisis extends beyond the issues surrounding Sanaa Airport and the alleged blockade. Instead, it involves violations of sovereignty and attempts to impose Iranian influence outside the state’s authority. Alimi characterized the militia’s narratives and threats as blatant extortion, driven by a fascist inclination to plunge Yemen into a comprehensive humanitarian crisis.
He further explained that the Houthis previously targeted oil facilities in Hadramout and Shabwa to prevent residents in liberated provinces from achieving better living conditions. Alimi drew parallels to Iran’s long-standing efforts to undermine prosperity in the region.
The President stressed that Yemen’s peace process requires bold political tests. He asserted that no group should challenge the government’s exclusive authority, retain weapons outside state institutions, or claim political, religious, or tribal rights that supersede the will of the citizens and the rule of law.
Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidency Office, also attended the meeting.
