President Rashad Alimi Meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

On Friday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Greetings from President Putin

During the meeting, Lavrov conveyed greetings from President Vladimir Putin. He extended congratulations to Yemen’s leadership, government, and people on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the September 26 Revolution.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The discussion highlighted the longstanding relationship between Yemen and Russia. Both leaders explored promising opportunities to expand and enhance cooperation across various sectors. This dialogue followed President Alimi’s fruitful visit to Moscow in May.

Support for Yemen

President Alimi praised the exceptional bilateral ties between Yemen and Russia. He acknowledged Russia’s support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy and its commitment to fostering peace and stability. Alimi also condemned the ongoing terrorist threats that jeopardize maritime security and international peace.

Upcoming Russia-Arab Summit

The meeting also addressed preparations for the first Russia-Arab Summit, scheduled for October, which will include Yemen’s participation.

Local Developments and Human Rights Concerns

President Alimi briefed Lavrov on the current local situation and the devastating impacts of the war ignited by Houthi militias. He highlighted the serious threats to maritime navigation and shipping, as well as severe human rights violations, including the detention and disappearance of numerous UN agency staff and international mission members.

Commitment to Peace

The President reaffirmed the commitment of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable peace process. This commitment aligns with the agreed-upon national, regional, and international references, particularly UN Resolution 2216.

The Russian delegation featured Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin and Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
