In a significant move to support and enhance the healthcare sector in Yemen, the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen has implemented numerous developmental projects and initiatives. These efforts aim to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life for Yemenis by elevating the medical care provided to them.
Transformative Healthcare Projects
The Saudi program has initiated a range of projects, including the construction and equipping of hospitals and medical centers, rehabilitation and operation of these facilities, and building the capacities of medical personnel. A standout project is the establishment of the King Salman Medical and Educational City in Al Mahrah Governorate. Spanning one million square meters, it is one of the largest projects serving the health and education sectors in Yemen. The city features a fully-equipped hospital with 110 beds, numerous outpatient clinics, and operating rooms.
Moreover, the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital in the temporary capital, Aden, shines as a beacon of medical excellence in Yemen. With 14 specialized clinics, a heart center, and a capacity of 270 beds over 20,000 square meters, the hospital has provided over 1.3 million medical consultations and carried out 8,700 surgeries, including 440 heart surgeries from January 2023 to June 2024, highlighting the significant impact of these projects on various segments of Yemeni society.
Specialized Centers and Comprehensive Care
The program also includes the establishment of a specialized oncology center in Taiz Governorate, aimed at enhancing the health sector’s efficiency in Taiz and its surrounding areas through radiation and chemotherapy services. Additionally, the Hadhramaut University Hospital and Cancer Center, covering 39,625 square meters with 100 beds, 23 outpatient clinics, and three operating rooms, further exemplify the program’s commitment to comprehensive care.
In Aden, a center for the rehabilitation of disabled children serves 7,840 beneficiaries directly and indirectly, aiming to integrate children with disabilities into society by providing therapeutic and rehabilitative services. Another noteworthy project is the construction and equipping of Sabah Hospital in Abyan Governorate, offering various services including maternity and child care, inpatient rooms, and emergency services.
Alleviating the Burden on Kidney Patients
Addressing the needs of kidney patients, the program has established a dialysis center in Al Mahrah, offering complete medical services and serving the governorate and its neighbors. This initiative, along with the operations and intensive care center in Al Mahrah, equipped with full medical attachments, reduces the need for patients to travel outside the governorate for treatment.
Enhancing Medical Services and Public Health
The developmental projects and initiatives have significantly improved the efficiency and effectiveness of medical services in Yemeni governorates, making healthcare more accessible and of higher quality. These efforts have bolstered public health, provided training, created job opportunities in the healthcare sector, developed human capital capabilities, and contributed to health prevention and maintenance. Serving 4,486,847 beneficiaries and supporting 26 medical facilities across nine Yemeni governorates, the Saudi program has substantially benefited Yemeni brothers and sisters, showcasing the profound impact of these developmental projects in the healthcare sector.
