Presidential Leadership Council member Othman Majali meets with Alistair Burt for discussions on key issues.

Meeting with Former UK Minister Highlights Yemen's Ongoing Challenges

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Sheikh Othman Majali, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, met with Alistair Burt, the former UK Minister for the Middle East and North Africa. This meeting took place at the Yemeni Embassy in London and served as a platform to discuss Yemen’s ongoing struggles and the path towards peace.

Reflection on Past Efforts for Peace

During the meeting, Majali reminisced about Burt’s previous visit to Yemen in 2013. At that time, Burt played a crucial role in advancing the national dialogue and building consensus before the Houthi militia’s violent takeover in September 2014. Majali highlighted how Iran’s blatant intervention, including its support and armament of the Houthi forces, undermined all chances for peace and stability in Yemen, plunging the country into a prolonged conflict.

Iranian Influence and Regional Security Concerns

Majali expressed concerns about Iran’s destructive influence, noting that it extends to providing the Houthis with advanced technology and expertise. This support has enabled the militia to target commercial vessels and disrupt international shipping in the Red Sea, contributing to a global food supply crisis. He emphasized the urgent need to address these security threats to restore peace in the region.

Saudi Arabia and UAE’s Support for Peace

Majali praised the sincere and brotherly efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in revitalizing the peace process. He acknowledged their commitment to supporting Yemen’s development, economic recovery, and reconstruction initiatives, which are essential for the country’s future stability.

Commitment to Peace and Humanitarian Assistance

In response, Alistair Burt reaffirmed his dedication to promoting peace initiatives in Yemen. He underscored the importance of achieving security and stability, which would enable Yemenis to overcome the humanitarian and economic crises exacerbated by years of war. Burt’s commitment aligns with the broader international community’s efforts to assist Yemen in rebuilding its infrastructure and fostering sustainable development.

Key Attendees

The meeting also saw the participation of Moammar Al-Eryani, Yemen’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Abdullah Al-Jaboubi, the Deputy Head of the Yemeni mission in the United Kingdom. Their presence underscored the significance of international collaboration in addressing Yemen’s challenges.

This meeting marks a crucial step in fostering dialogue and cooperation aimed at restoring peace and stability in Yemen. The ongoing support from the international community remains vital as the country navigates its path toward recovery.
