The Organization for Rights and Freedoms documented the deaths and injuries of 51 civilians, including women and children, due to shelling, sniper fire, and targeted attacks on residential neighborhoods and villages in Taiz Governorate. These incidents occurred between October 14 and October 20, 2023, and were attributed to the Houthi militia, which is supported by the Iranian regime.
The organization reported that the Houthi attacks resulted in the deaths of nine civilians, comprising three men and six women. Additionally, 42 others sustained injuries, including 18 men, 12 children, and 12 women.
The organization emphasized that these deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian objects may constitute war crimes that require accountability. It stressed that protecting civilian lives represents a legal and humanitarian obligation that cannot be postponed.
The continued civilian casualties in Taiz necessitate serious international action that goes beyond mere condemnation. The organization called for practical and effective measures to halt the violations and protect the population.
The Organization for Rights and Freedoms urged the United Nations and relevant international organizations to take immediate action to protect civilians and stop the attacks targeting them. It also called for independent and transparent investigations into these incidents, identifying those responsible and holding them accountable under the law. Furthermore, the organization highlighted the need to ensure unhindered access to humanitarian and medical assistance for the affected individuals and to implement effective measures to prevent the recurrence of violations and end the culture of impunity.
