Lebanon Faces Nationwide Power Outage Due to Fuel Shortage

Nationwide Power Outage Hits Lebanon Amid Fuel Shortage

Lebanon Faces Dark Saturday

Lebanon experienced a complete power outage across the country on Saturday due to a significant shortage in gas supplies, which are essential for operating its power stations. The state-run Lebanese Electricity Corporation announced the news, highlighting the severity of the situation in a statement released by the National News Agency.

Forced Shutdown of Power Plants

The blackout was the direct result of a “forced shutdown” of the last operational production unit at the Zahrani power plant. The shutdown occurred because the plant completely depleted its reserves of gas oil, a crucial fuel for electricity generation. This abrupt halt in operations led to a nationwide cessation of electric power, affecting all territories including key facilities such as the airport, seaport, water pumps, sewage systems, and prisons.

Efforts to Restore Electricity

The Lebanese Electricity Corporation assured the public that efforts are underway to restart the units that were forcibly taken offline. These efforts are contingent on securing new supplies of gas oil. Once the fuel supply is replenished, the corporation plans to gradually restore electricity to the country, aiming to return to the normal power supply levels.

Lebanon’s Escalating Electricity Crisis

Lebanon is grappling with a severe electricity crisis, which is part of the broader economic challenges the country has faced in recent years. The crisis has led to frequent power outages and a significant reduction in energy supplies, exacerbating the difficulties for the Lebanese population.

The Lebanese Electricity Corporation’s announcement underscores the urgent need for solutions to address the fuel shortage and restore reliable electricity service across Lebanon. As the country works to navigate through these challenging times, the impact of the power outage serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of energy security and economic stability.
