Israeli Settlers’ Sheep Theft in Southern Hebron Escalates Tensions

Israeli Settlers Steal Sheep Herd in Southern Hebron

On Thursday, surveillance cameras captured Israeli settlers stealing a flock of sheep in the Masafer Yatta area, located south of Hebron. This incident adds to the ongoing series of violations targeting Palestinian residents and their property in the West Bank, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.

Details of the Incident

The recorded footage shows several settlers infiltrating a Palestinian family’s home early in the morning. They forcibly entered the livestock pen and cut the locks securing it. Local resident Mohammed Abu Ali reported that the settlers managed to steal between 45 and 50 sheep, as well as several dogs present at the site.

Abu Ali emphasized that these sheep are vital to his family’s livelihood. He noted a troubling increase in such attacks since the onset of the war in Gaza. “For the past two and a half years, settlers have been attacking us almost daily… Their goal is to displace us from this land,” he stated.

Systematic Displacement Attempts

The Masafer Yatta region has been the site of repeated assaults, which include:

  • Attacks on residents
  • Theft of livestock
  • Vandalism of property

Palestinian authorities have raised concerns about a rising trend in attempts to displace Bedouin and agricultural communities in the area, posing a serious threat to their existence.

Alarming Statistics

According to the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, April alone recorded 1,637 attacks carried out by settlers in the West Bank. Furthermore, since October 8, 2023, assaults by the military and settlers have resulted in:

  • The deaths of 1,162 Palestinians
  • Injuries to approximately 12,245 others
  • The arrest of nearly 23,000 individuals

These attacks coincide with a significant Israeli military escalation in the West Bank, which includes raids, arrests, and property destruction, reflecting a growing tension in the region.
