On Saturday, the Iraqi Interior Ministry announced the arrest of 17 officials and 3 officers in connection with the devastating fire at the Al-Kut Commercial Center in Wasit Province. This tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 69 people, and authorities expect the death toll may rise as some bodies remain unaccounted for.
Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, head of the Ministry’s Relations and Media Department, stated that a high-level investigative committee, established by the Prime Minister, found clear negligence from various parties. The committee gathered evidence and testimonies from witnesses and officials, which highlighted significant failures that exacerbated the disaster and increased both human and material losses.
The arrests stem from Article 331 of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of 1969, which empowers the committee to continue its investigation and hold all responsible parties accountable without exception. This legal action underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the tragedy.
The Ministry confirmed that investigations are ongoing. They emphasized that the final results will be disclosed transparently to the public once completed, adhering to principles of justice and accountability for the victims.
This incident marks one of the deadliest civil disasters in Iraq in recent years. It has sparked increasing public demands for accountability and improvements in safety standards at commercial and service facilities. The tragedy has ignited a national conversation about the need for better regulations to prevent such disasters in the future.
