Yemeni Leadership Engages in Critical Discussions with UN Special Envoy

Aden Hosts Diplomatic Meeting Amidst Ongoing Crisis

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, the President of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, along with council member Sheikh Osman Majali, welcomed the UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg at the Ma’asheeq Palace in Aden on Thursday. This meeting underscores Yemen’s ongoing efforts to navigate through its complex political landscape.

Strategic Briefings and Condolences

During the session, the Presidential Leadership Council received an extensive briefing from the UN envoy about the outcomes of his recent communications on national, regional, and international levels. Grundberg outlined his upcoming priorities aimed at de-escalation and reviving the political process, which has been severely disrupted by the Houthi militias with support from the Iranian regime.

Grundberg also expressed his deepest condolences to President Al-Alimi for the victims of the devastating floods and torrents that have affected several Yemeni provinces in recent weeks. This gesture highlights the international community’s solidarity with Yemen during its humanitarian crises.

Appreciation for De-escalation Efforts

The UN Special Envoy lauded the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government for their efforts to reduce tensions across all fronts and responsibly engage with initiatives to prevent the country from sliding back into full-scale war. This acknowledgment serves as a testament to Yemen’s commitment to peace and stability.

Full Support for UN Efforts

President Al-Alimi, on behalf of the council and the government, reaffirmed their full support for the United Nations’ endeavors to kickstart a comprehensive political process as per the roadmap proposed by Saudi Arabia. He appreciated the kingdom’s efforts to alleviate the living conditions worsened by the Houthi’s terrorist attacks on oil facilities and international shipping lanes, with backing from Iran.

Highlighting Houthi Militias’ Actions

The President emphasized the importance of maintaining local, regional, and international focus on the Houthi militias’ practices, including severe human rights violations and arbitrary actions against Yemen Airways. These actions exacerbate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people and damage the company’s assets and reputation.

He pointed out that the recent failed terrorist attempt by the Houthi militias to target the Safer oil facility is the latest evidence that these militias are not reliable partners for peace. Instead, they represent a project of destruction prioritizing their backers’ interests over the Yemeni people’s welfare.

International Unity and Listening to Yemeni Aspirations

Al-Alimi stressed the need for continued international unity on the Yemeni issue and the importance of heeding the Yemeni people’s aspirations for stability and peace in line with relevant international resolutions, especially UN Resolution 2216.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Transport Abdulsalam Humid, General Saleh Al-Maqaleh, director of the Presidential Leadership Council’s office, and officials from the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Authority, Yemen Airways, and Dirk Jan Omtzigt, the economic advisor to the UN envoy.

This high-level engagement marks a pivotal moment in Yemen’s quest for peace and stability, highlighting the international community’s role in supporting the country through its challenges.
