Sources from the University of Ibb have revealed alarming breaches in the educational system. The university awarded a master’s degree in public law to Houthi leader Hassan Ahmed Hassan Al-Kahlani, despite his absence from classes and exams for two entire semesters.
Students enrolled in the master’s program reported that they never saw Al-Kahlani in the examination halls. They indicated that another individual took the exams on his behalf, having previously obtained leaked copies of the tests. This collusion involved Houthi officials within the university and the College of Law administration.
Al-Kahlani serves as the Deputy Director of External Affairs for the Houthi Intelligence and Security Agency. He is internationally wanted for his involvement in smuggling Iranian weapons to the militia. This troubling background raises concerns about the integrity of academic values at the university.
Sources indicate that these violations are not isolated incidents. Over the past few years, several militia leaders have enrolled in the College of Law, appearing in academic records despite their lack of attendance and failure to meet educational requirements. Some only show up for exams, while others completely skip them.
The college administration provides faculty with photocopied grade sheets instead of original documents signed by students during exams. This practice facilitates the passing of violations without leaving an official trace, jeopardizing the university’s reputation and undermining the educational process. Transforming advanced degrees into tools awarded based on loyalty rather than academic achievement poses a significant threat to education in the country.
