Houthi official begins drilling an illegal investment well in Ibb, facing strong public opposition.

Houthi Official Begins Controversial Investment Well Drilling in Ibb

A Houthi official from Amran, identified as Moein Al-Abriqi, has initiated the drilling of an investment well in the Mashab area of Thawab Al-A’la, Ibb Governorate. This action has drawn significant protests from local residents who oppose the project, especially given the backing of Houthi militia forces.

Local Concerns Over Water Supply

Local sources report that the new well is situated near a primary well that supplies water to six nearby villages. For years, residents have requested the drilling of an additional well to meet their water needs. However, the Houthi authorities denied their requests, citing concerns over depleting the water supply. In a stark contradiction, they granted Al-Abriqi an expedited permit for his project.

Resistance from Residents

Despite obtaining directives from the Houthi-appointed governor to halt the drilling, Al-Abriqi has continued his work. He relies on support from the Fourth Military Region, which has deployed forces to protect him during the drilling process.

Growing Public Anger

Sources indicate that Al-Abriqi is also the same official the militia aims to benefit by closing the Wholesale Vegetable and Fruit Market in Al-Dhahhar. The plan involves converting it into a private market in the Sabil area west of Ibb city. This move has sparked increasing public outrage against the militia’s practices.

The situation continues to evolve as residents voice their concerns over water access and the perceived favoritism shown to certain officials. The community remains vigilant, seeking to protect their rights and resources amid ongoing tensions.
