The American Center for Justice (ACJ) has reported that the Houthi militia has abducted Ayman Dabean Muhammad from the airport area in Sana’a. The incident occurred while Dabean was en route to perform the Maghrib prayer. The militia transported him to an undisclosed location using a military vehicle and personnel in official uniforms, without any legal justification or arrest warrant.
According to testimonies provided to the ACJ, Ayman Dabean, who operates a mobile ice cream cart, has been subjected to enforced disappearance since his abduction. Local police departments have denied any involvement in his detention, providing inconsistent information to his family regarding his current whereabouts. They have shifted responsibility between the regional administration and the intelligence agency, underscoring the lack of rule of law and the militia’s domination over state institutions.
Ayman Dabean is recognized for his volunteer efforts, including delivering sermons and religious lessons within his local community. His arrest appears to align with a broader strategy by the Houthi militia to suppress independent social activists and to monopolize religious and educational spaces. This pattern of targeting social activists constitutes a clear violation of the rights to freedom of expression and belief.
The American Center for Justice has condemned these actions as severe infringements on personal freedom and security, as well as assaults on freedom of belief and expression. The organization is calling for immediate clarity regarding Ayman Dabean’s fate and his unconditional release. Furthermore, it demands that the militia’s security forces be held legally and criminally accountable for his safety, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability regarding human rights violations in Yemen.
