Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has warned that unregulated artificial intelligence (AI) poses an increasing threat. He anticipates a significant rise in AI-supported cyberattacks over the next year.
In an interview with ABC News, Gates stated that the real danger lies not in AI spiraling out of control, but in “bad actors” exploiting current systems after removing safeguards and protections.
He added that allowing the removal of these safeguards opens the door to “many negative surprises,” particularly in the realm of cyberattacks, which he expects to be the most affected area in the coming year.
Gates clarified that the scenario of AI going out of control remains distant. However, he emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate future risks, asserting that the world is “not adequately prepared” for the disruptions AI may cause, especially in the job market.
Gates criticized the notion that AI companies can self-regulate, a concept defended by former U.S. President Donald Trump. He insisted that relying solely on companies “reflects that we are not doing enough to protect society.”
