Yemen and Russia Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Regional Developments

In a significant move towards bolstering bilateral relations, the Foreign Minister of Yemen, Dr. Shaye Al-Zindani, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, convened for official talks in Moscow this Tuesday. The discussions, aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two friendly nations, also touched upon the latest developments in Yemen and the broader region.

Positive Trajectory in Yemeni-Russian Relations

Dr. Al-Zindani highlighted the positive developments in the relationship between Yemen and Russia, noting the formation of a joint committee and the activation of several bilateral agreements. The ministers expressed their governments’ keenness to sign new cooperation agreements in various economic sectors, further expanding the horizons of their partnership.

Russia’s Support for Yemen Commended

The Yemeni Foreign Minister praised the Russian government’s support for Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, government, and people at the international level. He appreciated Russia’s efforts to achieve peace in Yemen and acknowledged the contributions of Saudi Arabia and Oman in attempting to establish a roadmap for peace, which has been hindered by the escalation of Houthi militia activities in the Red Sea.

Concerns over Regional Stability and Maritime Security

Dr. Al-Zindani raised concerns about the Houthi militia’s escalation in the Red Sea, emphasizing its negative impact on international trade, the global economy, and the marine environment. He urged the international community to adopt strong positions and support the Yemeni government’s efforts to end the war and achieve peace.

Addressing the Plight of Palestinians

The talks also covered the situation in Gaza, with Dr. Al-Zindani stressing the importance of ending the genocide against civilians by the Israeli military. He called for an immediate and comprehensive cessation of Israeli aggression and lauded the Russian government’s support for the Palestinian people.

Russia Reaffirms Strong Ties and Cooperation Ambitions

On his part, Minister Lavrov reaffirmed the robustness of Russian-Yemeni relations and Russia’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various fields.

Future Collaborations and Educational Opportunities

The ministers agreed to enhance and develop bilateral cooperation in science, technology, culture, energy, agriculture, and fisheries. They announced the upcoming meeting of the joint committee formed during Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak’s visit to Moscow last February. Additionally, Russia has decided to increase the number of scholarships for Yemeni students to study in Russia across various disciplines.

Concluding with a Joint Press Conference

Following their discussions, the ministers held a press conference, shedding light on the bilateral relations, shared positions, and recent developments in Yemen and the region. This meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to strengthen their ties and work collaboratively on regional issues.
