Council member Aidarus al-Zubaidi discusses Yemen’s current situation and peace efforts with the EU mission head.

Meeting Between Yemeni Leadership and EU Ambassador Addresses Key Challenges

On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Aidarus Qassem Al-Zubaidi, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, held a virtual meeting with Gabriel Monuera Vinals, the European Union Ambassador to Yemen. This meeting included several officials and focused on the latest political, humanitarian, and economic developments in Yemen and the surrounding region.

Current Challenges in Yemen

During the discussion, General Al-Zubaidi outlined the critical challenges Yemen faces at this pivotal moment. He emphasized the significant role that European Union countries play in supporting the Presidential Leadership Council and the government. Their assistance is crucial for normalizing conditions and enhancing stability in the liberated provinces.

Economic Struggles and Urgent Needs

General Al-Zubaidi highlighted the government’s difficulties in meeting its commitments to citizens amid the ongoing economic crisis. This crisis stems from the continued halt of oil and gas exports, following Houthi terrorist attacks on oil facilities in Hadramout and Shabwa. He reiterated the need for EU countries to support the government in resuming these exports. This support would enable the government to provide essential services, including electricity, pay salaries, and stabilize the rapidly declining currency.

Humanitarian and Development Support

The meeting also explored ways to enhance the humanitarian and developmental support that the European Union provides to Yemen. Expanding this assistance could alleviate the suffering of citizens and stimulate economic recovery.

Commitment to Peace Efforts

In response, the EU Ambassador stressed the importance of unity within the Presidential Leadership Council. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting the government’s urgent reforms in state institutions. Additionally, he reiterated the EU’s dedication to backing United Nations-led efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.

This meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between Yemeni leadership and international partners to address pressing challenges and work towards a stable future for Yemen.
