Arab League Voices Disappointment Over NPT Conference Impasse

The Arab League has expressed deep disappointment over the third consecutive failure to produce a consensus document during the Eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), held at the United Nations headquarters in New York over the past month. This failure raises significant concerns regarding the future effectiveness of the NPT and the broader non-proliferation regime.

Concerns Over Political Will

Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated that this repeated impasse reflects a troubling lack of political will among several nations to fulfill their commitments, particularly in the area of nuclear disarmament. He warned that such a situation poses a serious threat to the credibility and future of the treaty, undermining its intended objectives.

Call for Enhanced International Efforts

Aboul Gheit emphasized the necessity for renewed and intensified efforts in collaboration with the United Nations and other international organizations. He articulated that these efforts should focus on restoring the treaty’s credibility. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the League’s readiness to support any effective initiatives aimed at mitigating the risks associated with nuclear warfare.

Additionally, Aboul Gheit expressed concern regarding the current state of international polarization, which is impacting the review process. He noted that certain nuclear-armed states continue to emphasize the role of nuclear weapons within their defense strategies, particularly amid escalating geopolitical tensions and the expansion of military alliances.

Steadfast Position of Arab States

In his remarks, the Secretary-General commended the steadfast efforts of Arab nations to assert their rights, especially in their pursuit of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, as outlined in the 1995 resolution. He reiterated calls for Israel to join the treaty as a non-nuclear state and subject its nuclear facilities to comprehensive safeguards from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In conclusion, Aboul Gheit affirmed the rights of Arab states to pursue peaceful uses of nuclear energy, underscoring the importance of collective action in enhancing security and stability in the region.
