Amnesty International has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing during their assault on the city of El Fasher between 2024 and 2025. These allegations represent some of the most severe documented violations since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023.
According to Amnesty International’s report, which is based on 247 interviews with victims and eyewitnesses in North Darfur, the RSF launched systematic attacks on communities primarily composed of the Zaghawa tribe. These assaults included widespread violence against children, encompassing murder, abduction, forced recruitment, and rape.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, described the events as a “stain on the conscience of humanity.” The report highlighted that RSF fighters burned homes after residents fled, aiming to render the areas uninhabitable, which aligns with the definition of ethnic cleansing.
The report confirmed that these violations occurred repeatedly and on a large scale. This pattern suggests that leaders in positions of authority were aware of the situation but failed to intervene or hold perpetrators accountable. The organization also indicated that these actions could be linked to genocide, noting that investigations in Darfur are ongoing.
The violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces remain a pressing issue that demands international attention. Humanitarian organizations and concerned nations must take effective steps to address these crimes and ensure accountability for those responsible.
