Yemen's Minister of Information Signs Agreement with Arabsat for New Broadcasting Channels

Ministerial Collaboration to Enhance Yemeni Broadcasting

On November 12, 2023, Yemen’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, signed an agreement with Arabsat’s CEO, Engineer Hamidi Al-Anzi. This contract allocates satellite television channels on Arabsat’s new digital package, aimed at expanding the reach of Yemeni media.

Expanding Yemeni Media Coverage

Minister Al-Eryani emphasized that this agreement guarantees the broadcasting of several Yemeni channels, including Yemen, Aden, Hadramaut, and Saba. Additionally, the deal includes twelve local radio stations that will transmit via Arabsat’s Badr 8 satellite. The broadcast speed will reach 16 Mbps, enhancing the availability of Yemeni content across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe in the initial phase. The discussions also covered the development of collaborative efforts to improve broadcast quality, ensuring that the voices of legitimacy and the Yemeni people reach audiences worldwide in the subsequent phase.

Strengthening Cooperation Between Ministries

During his visit to Arabsat, Minister Al-Eryani and Engineer Al-Anzi, along with a team of engineers and specialists, explored avenues for cooperation that would benefit their shared interests. Al-Eryani highlighted the significance of Arabsat for Arab viewers across its media coverage areas and acknowledged the institution’s recent advancements, which have garnered widespread appreciation.

Recognition of Arabsat’s Role

Al-Eryani expressed admiration for the efforts made by Arabsat’s CEO to develop the organization in line with digital advancements. He noted the importance of an Arab initiative that preserves the national archive and showcases exemplary national works to Arab audiences. He pointed out that Arabsat, as an entity owned by all Arabs and affiliated with the Arab League, plays a crucial role in delivering safe content that upholds Arab identity and culture.

Support from Saudi Arabia

The Minister also acknowledged the generous support provided by the Saudi Ministry of Information to Yemen’s official media since the restoration of its role following the Houthi militia’s coup. He clarified that this support reflects the Saudi leadership’s commitment to their Yemeni counterparts on various levels.

Arabsat’s Commitment to Yemeni Culture

Engineer Hamidi Al-Anzi welcomed Minister Al-Eryani and presented the latest developments at Arabsat, including the media and communication services available to Yemeni channels. He revealed that approximately 650 television channels currently broadcast via Arabsat, with a new satellite launched every three to four years.

Al-Anzi remarked, “Yemeni culture is diverse and rich; it serves as a source for various arts worldwide and deserves to reach a global audience through expanded broadcasting of Yemeni channels via different satellites.”

Technological Advancements in Broadcasting

In 2023, Arabsat launched the Badr 8 satellite, manufactured to the highest standards by Airbus. This satellite broadcasts channels throughout the Arab region, East and Central Africa, and most European countries, from Italy in the south to Scandinavia and the British Isles in the north, and from Ukraine in the east to Portugal in the west. It offers high broadcast power, ensuring that signals reach densely populated areas, with reception possible using a 50 cm dish.

This agreement marks a significant step forward in enhancing the visibility and accessibility of Yemeni media on an international scale, fostering a stronger cultural exchange and representation for Yemen.
