Tragic Incident Claims Life of Eight-Year-Old in Shabwa
On Sunday, an eight-year-old boy tragically lost his life due to a landmine explosion while tending to sheep in the Al-Dhal area of the Mayfaa district in Shabwa Governorate. Human rights sources reported that the mine was connected to a wire near a gas transport line, resulting in the immediate death of the child, Nasser Ahmed Nasser, from the Baadas region.
Ongoing Efforts to Clear Landmines
In related news, the “Masam” project, dedicated to landmine removal, announced that its field teams successfully cleared a total of 1,103 explosive materials between September 6 and September 12. This haul included 1,047 unexploded ordnance, 51 anti-tank mines, four anti-personnel mines, and one improvised explosive device.
Alarming Statistics on Landmine Contamination
According to project statistics, since its inception in mid-2018, Masam has removed and destroyed approximately 514,193 explosive materials in liberated areas. Yemen continues to rank as one of the most landmine-contaminated countries, with these remnants of war repeatedly claiming civilian lives, particularly among children.
This ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for continued efforts in landmine clearance and the protection of vulnerable populations in conflict-affected regions.
