Minister of Transport Leads Meeting on Regional Maintenance Center Project at Aden International Airport

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Transport Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid chaired a meeting with key figures in the aviation sector. The meeting included Captain Nasser Mahmoud, Chairman of Yemen Airways, and Captain Saleh Bin Nahid, Head of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology. The main agenda focused on the implementation procedures for the Regional Maintenance and Engineering Center for Yemen Airways at Aden International Airport.

Strategic Importance of the Maintenance Center

Minister Hamid emphasized that the maintenance center represents a strategic and vital project for Aden Airport. He stated that the center would attract more airlines and significantly enhance operational performance at the airport. Furthermore, it will streamline aircraft maintenance for various airlines, reducing Yemen Airways’ annual maintenance expenses abroad, which can reach millions of dollars.

Enhancing National Capacity and Airport Status

The minister noted that the maintenance center will provide engineering and technical services using national staff for aircraft arriving at Aden International Airport. This initiative will bolster the airport’s strategic position as the gateway to the temporary capital and the country as a whole. He praised the efforts of the Civil Aviation Authority and Yemen Airways in advancing projects related to air transport. He urged for expedited completion of site acquisition and necessary arrangements to kick-start the project, asserting the ministry’s readiness to overcome any challenges that may hinder its progress.

Progress on Project Implementation

Captain Nasser Mahmoud, Chairman of Yemen Airways, provided an update on the company’s progress in preparing for the project. He outlined the steps taken to secure the project site, sign agreements with the Civil Aviation Authority, and arrange for an international tender to execute the project through specialized global companies.

Commitment to Support and Compliance

In response, Captain Saleh Bin Nahid expressed the authority’s commitment to facilitate the project and support any new initiatives at Aden Airport and other liberated area airports. He reaffirmed the authority’s dedication to international aviation standards and air navigation safety.

Next Steps and Final Agreement

The meeting concluded with an agreement to form a committee comprising legal affairs representatives from Yemen Airways and the General Authority for Civil Aviation. This committee will prepare a draft contract and finalize the agreement, including site specifications and dimensions for the Regional Maintenance and Engineering Center.

The establishment of this center marks a significant step forward in enhancing the aviation sector in Yemen and improving operational efficiencies at Aden International Airport.
