On Friday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Catherine Gramez-Kamoun, the French Ambassador to Yemen. The two leaders focused on the latest developments in both national and regional contexts, emphasizing the essential role of regional and international communities in fostering peace and stability in Yemen.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During the meeting, al-Barakani and Gramez-Kamoun reviewed the bilateral relations between Yemen and France. They discussed strategies to enhance and develop these ties, particularly in economic and developmental sectors. Both parties agreed on the importance of building capacities in vital areas to empower the Yemeni government. This empowerment aims to improve the efficiency and performance of public institutions, ultimately alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people amidst ongoing challenges.

Concerns Over Houthi Actions

Al-Barakani expressed grave concerns regarding the destructive path of the Houthi militias. He highlighted their terrorist practices that exacerbate the humanitarian crisis by targeting essential infrastructure, private sector activities, and public freedoms. Additionally, he condemned the siege of cities, underscoring the Houthis’ hostility towards the Yemeni people and their disregard for the escalating humanitarian disaster, which claims lives daily. He reiterated that only a legitimate state, grounded in constitutional rights and freedoms, can ensure Yemen’s security and stability. France’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Ambassador Gramez-Kamoun reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting the constitutional legitimacy in Yemen. She emphasized that the French administration prioritizes Yemen’s security, stability, and unity, as well as the resolution of the ongoing crisis. The recent visit by European Union ambassadors to the temporary capital, Aden, and the presentation of credentials by several of them signal continued support and cooperation despite existing challenges.

The Role of the Parliament in Peace Efforts

The French ambassador also acknowledged the crucial role of the Yemeni Parliament in the peace process. She noted that these meetings and dialogues form part of the joint efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in Yemen.

Meeting Attendees

The meeting also included Member of Parliament Mohammed al-Hamiri, who contributed to the discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
