The International Commission of Inquiry calls for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories.

UN Committee Calls for End to Illegal Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territories

The United Nations International Committee on the Investigation of Occupied Palestinian Territories has urged nations and international organizations to take decisive action to end Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, including East Jerusalem. This call aligns with established international law and emphasizes the need for immediate intervention.

Recommendations for the UN General Assembly and Security Council

The committee detailed how the UN General Assembly and the Security Council can identify and implement specific measures to effectively conclude the occupation as swiftly as possible. They highlighted the importance of adhering to the International Court of Justice’s ruling from July and the UN General Assembly’s resolution passed on September 13, 2024.

Root Causes of Conflict

Naomi Pillay, the chair of the committee, stated, “The root cause of the prolonged conflict and cycles of violence is the Israeli occupation.” Her remarks underscore the urgent need to address the foundational issues contributing to ongoing tensions in the region.

Obligations of Israel and the International Community

The committee outlined several obligations for Israel, the United Nations, and individual countries. These include:

  • Ending the illegal occupation and halting settlement expansion.
  • Dismantling existing settlements and evacuating settlers from occupied territories.
  • Restoring land, property, and natural resources to the Palestinian people.
  • Repealing all discriminatory and restrictive laws against Palestinians.
  • Ensuring that no country recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or establishes diplomatic missions there.
  • Rejecting any claim of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied territories.

The committee’s recommendations aim to foster a just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By urging international collaboration and adherence to legal frameworks, the committee seeks to pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
