Houthi Violations in Taiz: Two Women Killed and Nine Civilians Injured
The Taiz Human Rights Center reported that two women died and nine other civilians, including a woman and two children, sustained injuries due to sniper fire and artillery shelling by Houthi militia in residential neighborhoods of Taiz Governorate on Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, 2026.
Details of the Incident
The center’s statement clarified that the victims fell in various areas of Taiz city and its districts as a result of targeting residential neighborhoods and homes with artillery shells, in addition to direct sniper fire from Houthi militants.
The statement highlighted the death of Nadia Ali bin Ali Abdu Hassan on Saturday after she was shot by a Houthi sniper while in the Aqaqa neighborhood west of Taiz city. On Sunday, Fatima Ahmed Abdulqader died from shrapnel wounds caused by a Houthi shell that struck her home in the Najada area of the Sabir Al-Mawadim district in southern Taiz. Additionally, seven other civilians were injured due to Houthi shelling on villages and homes.
Violations of International Humanitarian Law
The Taiz Human Rights Center emphasized that the ongoing targeting of civilians by the Houthi militia through sniper fire and artillery shelling, including attacks on homes and residential areas, constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law. This law mandates the protection of civilians and civilian objects and prohibits attacks that endanger the lives of the population.
The center noted that the number of casualties over two consecutive days in various areas of Taiz reflects the severity of continued Houthi assaults on populated areas. These attacks result in human losses, humanitarian suffering, and instill fear among women, children, and families.
Call for International Action
The center urged the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities. It called for urgent action to stop the targeting of civilians, homes, and residential neighborhoods in Taiz, and to work towards protecting the population and holding accountable those responsible for the violations committed against them.
