Yemen Warns of Iranian Support for Armed Groups
The Republic of Yemen has issued a warning regarding the implications of Iranian support for armed groups outside state institutions. This support enhances their military and technical capabilities, posing a threat to regional security and international maritime routes. The statement came during Yemen’s address at the Sixth International Conference on the Spread of Extremist Ideas, held in Moscow, Russia. Major General Mohammed Musaad Al-Amir, the Deputy Minister of Interior for Security and Police, delivered the speech.
Risks of Extremism in Yemen
Major General Al-Amir emphasized that Yemen exemplifies the dangers of extremism evolving from mere ideas into armed projects. These projects possess weapons, funding, modern technologies, and networks for recruitment and smuggling. He pointed out that external support received by the Houthi militias from Iran has significantly bolstered their military and technical capabilities, including drones and missiles.
Threats to Regional Security
Al-Amir clarified that the risks associated with these capabilities extend beyond Yemen’s security. They also threaten regional stability and international navigation, particularly in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. These areas are vital corridors for global trade, making the situation increasingly concerning for international stakeholders.
