Finland Joins French Nuclear Deterrence Initiative
Finland has announced its participation in the “Advanced Nuclear Deterrence” initiative proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron to European nations. This decision increases the number of participating countries to ten.
In a joint statement, Helsinki and Paris confirmed that a nuclear steering committee will be established in the coming months to initiate cooperation under the initiative.
Strengthening European Security
Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized on the platform X that the initiative aims to enhance European security and reduce escalation risks. He stressed that it does not serve as a substitute for NATO’s nuclear deterrence.
Stubb added that NATO and the European Union will remain Finland’s primary security frameworks. He also confirmed that Finland does not intend to allow the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory during peacetime.
Moscow Declines to Comment
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refrained from commenting on Finland’s decision. He explained that he had not yet reviewed the details of the initiative and would withhold any position until the situation becomes clearer.
