A devastating traffic accident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Al-Balad Al-Taa’m district of Al-Raimah Governorate. A Hilux vehicle, carrying approximately 20 passengers, veered off the road and plunged into a ravine along the main Al-Maghrabah road. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left 12 others injured, some in critical condition. Unfortunately, such scenes have become all too familiar on Yemen’s narrow and deteriorating mountain roads.

Roads: A Constant Partner in Tragedy

This accident highlights the grim reality faced by many Yemeni provinces, where daily journeys turn into life-threatening risks. The roads suffer from severe deterioration, lack of maintenance, and absence of safety measures. Years of war and neglect have significantly damaged the road network, making travel between cities and villages perilous, especially in mountainous regions characterized by steep slopes.

Alarming Statistics Reveal Ongoing Crisis

According to official statistics from the Ministry of Interior released in May 2025, the liberated areas experienced the following from 2020 to 2025:

16,348 injuries
18,725 traffic accidents
Material losses exceeding 14.4 billion Yemeni rials

Traffic police attribute this alarming trend to several factors, including speeding, reckless driving, underage drivers, deteriorating infrastructure, lack of traffic signals, and inadequate maintenance and oversight during years of conflict.

Grim Figures for the First Half of 2026

Recent data from traffic authorities indicates a continued rise in casualties during the first half of 2026, with reports showing:

392 fatalities
2,841 injuries, including 1,048 severe cases
2,630 traffic incidents, with Marib leading in both accidents and fatalities, followed by Taiz and Lahij.

Authorities also noted additional factors exacerbating the risk of accidents, such as overloading, underage driving, motorcycle violations, and illegal modifications to fuel systems that lead to vehicle fires.

The rising statistics confirm that Yemen’s roads have become a daily source of danger. Traffic accidents are no longer isolated incidents; they have evolved into a widespread phenomenon amid a lack of maintenance, weak oversight, and deteriorating infrastructure.
