Minister of Health Reaffirms National Efforts

Dr. Qassem Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to implementing the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. He emphasized the importance of protecting communities, especially children and youth, from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine products.

Recent Initiatives in Tobacco Control

During a virtual meeting of Eastern Mediterranean health ministers organized by the World Health Organization, Dr. Baheeb highlighted significant steps taken by the Ministry of Health in recent years to combat tobacco use. Despite the country’s challenging circumstances, the ministry has developed a draft national multi-sectoral strategy to combat tobacco. This strategy aims to unify national efforts and enhance the implementation of the WHO framework.

Regulatory Measures for a Tobacco-Free Environment

The ministry has introduced several regulatory and legislative measures to promote a tobacco-free environment. These include prohibiting the use of tobacco products in government institutions, public spaces, and transportation. Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Roads, the ministry has banned the sale of tobacco products near schools. Public awareness campaigns have also been launched to educate the community about the risks associated with smoking and nicotine products.

International Recognition for Tobacco Control Efforts

Dr. Baheeb noted that Yemen has completed the ratification process for the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. This protocol serves as a crucial tool for enhancing oversight and reducing illegal trade. As a result of these efforts, the Prime Minister received a special recognition award from the Director-General of the World Health Organization for tobacco control this year.

Upcoming National Awareness Campaign

Looking ahead, the ministry plans to launch a high-profile national campaign titled “Your Heart is a Trust.” This initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use while promoting healthy behaviors. The campaign will specifically focus on protecting children, adolescents, and youth from the tobacco industry’s targeting.

Regional Collaboration on Tobacco Control

The meeting also featured discussions led by Dr. Mohammed Al-Qasha, Director of the National Tobacco Control Program. Participants explored strategies to protect youth from tobacco and nicotine products and enhance regional cooperation to address health challenges posed by their prevalence.

Countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region shared their experiences in tobacco control, discussing ways to develop policies and legislation that safeguard youth from tobacco industry targeting. The meeting underscored the importance of unified regional efforts to tackle the challenges posed by emerging tobacco and nicotine products and to strengthen preventive measures for future generations.
