This meeting is a continuation of ongoing efforts to tackle the challenges posed by migrant flows within Yemen.

Developing Partnership Mechanisms

During their discussions, both parties explored various mechanisms to improve partnership and coordination between the Yemeni government and the IOM. They underscored the necessity of elevating protection levels and humanitarian services for migrants, ensuring that these efforts align with international human rights standards.

Importance of Migration Issues Amid Exceptional Circumstances

Minister Meshdal commended the IOM’s support for migrants and reaffirmed the Yemeni government’s commitment to prioritizing this critical issue. Given the extraordinary circumstances facing the country, which have led to increasing humanitarian challenges, this commitment highlights the government’s dedication to promoting migrants’ rights and facilitating essential support.

Increasing Humanitarian Challenges

Nabil Abdulhafiz, the ministry’s undersecretary, noted that the persistent influx of migrants from the Horn of Africa along Yemen’s extensive coastlines is contributing to escalating humanitarian challenges. These challenges profoundly affect the living conditions and basic needs of migrants, especially amid an internal displacement crisis that has left over five million people displaced due to ongoing conflict, further straining available resources and services.

Enhancing Coordination for Effective Response

Abdulhafiz emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination among relevant stakeholders to ensure a more effective response to the growing needs of migrants. This initiative necessitates collaborative actions between the government and international organizations to provide adequate support and improve protection levels for vulnerable populations.

Acknowledging the Yemeni Government’s Efforts

The head of the IOM mission expressed appreciation for the existing cooperation with the Ministry of Human Rights. He highlighted the organization’s commitment to broadening partnership areas with the Yemeni government. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of enhancing support programs for migrants, particularly in healthcare and protection, to address their increasing needs effectively.

The meeting signifies a vital step in reinforcing the partnership between the Yemeni government and international organizations, ensuring that humanitarian efforts continue to prioritize the rights and welfare of migrants in the region.
