Minister Signs New Vaccination Strategy in Aden
Today, Dr. Qassem Baheeb, the Minister of Public Health and Population, signed a new social behavioral change strategy aimed at increasing childhood vaccination rates in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen. This initiative received significant support from the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
Overview of the Strategy
The IRC team, which included Dr. Nabil Naji, Director of Health and Social Behavioral Change, Dr. Samihah Batah, Health Coordinator, and Caroline Sekiwa, presented the strategy’s development stages. They outlined its goals and objectives, emphasizing the field research conducted across various governorates. This research aims to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccinations and their availability at no cost.
Addressing Core Issues
The strategy focuses on tackling the root causes of vaccination hesitancy. It aims to rebuild trust between healthcare providers and the health system by enhancing service quality at vaccination centers. Key components include ensuring clean and organized environments and training healthcare personnel in effective communication. Additionally, the strategy seeks to engage influential community figures, such as religious leaders, teachers, and local leaders, to correct misconceptions about vaccinations. By sharing success stories and positive experiences, the initiative aims to foster trust and reassurance among parents.
Expanding Vaccination Access
The strategy also plans to expand mobile vaccination units to improve follow-up mechanisms and ensure vaccine availability. In a separate meeting today in Aden, Minister Baheeb discussed collaboration and partnership opportunities in the health sector with Joseph Beliveau, Executive Director of MedGlobal. They reviewed the organization’s health interventions and the geographical areas they cover, including community clinics along the western coast and programs focused on maternal and child health and nutrition.
Acknowledging Humanitarian Efforts
Dr. Baheeb commended MedGlobal’s humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering, particularly in remote areas affected by the current humanitarian crisis. He emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts and integrating interventions with other health projects implemented by health sector partners. This coordination ensures that interventions align with actual needs, in collaboration with relevant ministry authorities.
